Alec MacDonald

I have drawn and painted most of my life. I came to work in NZ in 1979 and fell in love with the land and waterscapes around Wellington. In particular, the Pāuatahanui Inlet has kept me enthralled. I have sought to work in a superrealist style on landscapes for their tranquillity and solitude. I am equally drawn to the dissonance and suspense of understated surrealism and find inspiration in dreams and my sense of the ridiculous and playful. This has found expression in the series of “airborne animal fantasies” that I originally painted for my great-nieces and -nephew.

My work is currently shown in the Alfred Memelink Artspace Gallery in Petone and the NZAFA. My work has been recognised with Awards three times in recent years.
